What you give it

One plain-text file. WhatsApp exports a chat as a .txt with one message per line — a timestamp, the sender, then the message:

Years of these. You never have to read them end to end; the parser groups them by month so you can skim.

Getting the .txt off your phone

  1. Step 1

    Open the chat with your partner.

    In WhatsApp on your iPhone, tap the chat with your partner. Open the conversation thread itself — not the chats list.

  2. Step 2

    Tap the contact name at the top.

    This opens the contact info screen.

  3. Step 3

    Scroll down and tap Export Chat.

    You'll see a prompt asking whether to attach media. Choose 'Without Media' — the text alone is what we need, and it's faster to transfer.

  4. Step 4

    Send the .txt file to your laptop.

    Mail it to yourself, AirDrop it to your Mac, or save it to Files. Anything that gets the file onto a computer.

Below is the same parser the product uses, running in this tab on a fictional three-year chat export. The file is fetched from this page, read by a background worker on your device, and every number is computed here.

The finished PDF

The messages you keep become timestamped, quoted blocks under a one-line summary of the selection. Building the PDF is the one step that runs on our servers, so it isn't part of the demo above — here is the file it produces.

The demo above opens on the parser's mechanical default, which ticks a few more; this PDF came from a finished selection with the attachment placeholders unticked. It's an excerpt of the fictional pack's Commitment evidence PDF, which is why the page footers read 9–13.

The parsing runs in your browser

Your chat is never uploadedThe sample above is downloaded from this page, then parsed inside a Web Worker on your device — the stats and the message list are computed here, and nothing goes back to us. With your own export it is stricter still: the file is read straight off your disk and never uploaded, so the messages you leave out are never ours to see. Open your browser's network panel and run the demo again if you'd like to check — you'll see the one request that fetches the sample, and nothing after it.

What it does — and what it doesn't

It does

  • Read a WhatsApp .txt export and count the messages.
  • Chart messages per month, the months covered, and the longest quiet stretch.
  • Group messages by month and filter them by keyword.
  • Tick a mechanical starting point — the first and last message of each month, plus keyword matches — which you then change.
  • Format the messages you keep into a timestamped PDF section for your pack.

It doesn't

  • Read your messages for meaning, score them, or rank them.
  • Tell you which messages to include or leave out.
  • Judge whether your evidence is sufficient. No tool can, and we don't try.
  • Give migration advice — that's a registered migration agent's job.
